I find the current discussions fascinating having working in Managed Care in the Us for 20 yrs. as an administrator (operations of a large medical/dental ctr., consumer affairs, contract negotiator). Moved to Canada 7 yrs, ago.
How does this sound to Americans with no insurance or too high a premium and out-of-pocket?
Nominal monthly premium (under $100 for a couple), no co-pays, no co-insurance, no deductible for first-rate care?
Both my husband and I have accessed care for a number of reasons. No wait to see our primary care doc, but, yes, some waiting for specialists and some imaging when not urgent. Willingness to schedule surgeries (hip; knee), which we have declined, but they remain viable options. Several Urgent Care Centers in our neighborhood; again, no cost to us to access. I continue to be amazed.
My one complaint here in Canada is that premiums should be increased and a low copay should be considered in order to help sustain system.
I'm hugely supportive of health care reform in the US. From my perspective, there could be massive savings in administrative costs in simplifying the system, Let's get some legislation in place and let the large corporations figure out how to implement. Congress can't possibly begin to understand the complexities. And, by all means, mandate enrollment. Getting all Americans to sign up would spread the risk and lower health care costs.I.O.
