My family and I moved to Edmonton, Alberta, Canada in 1975. A year later I had to have a hysterectomy which cost me $5.00!
Our two daughters had their tonsils and adenoids removed at no cost. One daughter required major jaw surgery - all covered.
Our high school son had an emergency appendectomy. Right, at no cost.
Our second son was hospitalized with a displaced patella and needed a full leg cast - again, that was covered.
When I had surgery on my shoulder joint, due to arthritis, my costs were nothing out-of-pocket.
Three years ago I needed a total knee replacement, again with no money
paid by me.
My husband has been hospitalized several times with kidney stones. No cost out-of -pocket. Three years ago he had a pace-maker implanted. It works fine and we didn't have to pay for it!
Is this possible for my family and friends in the U.S.?
If we had been in our home country - the United States of America - we would either have had to for-go the surgeries or gone bankrupt.
Our youngest daughter has Huntington Disease. She will be 37 this month, February, and has been in a Continuing Care Center for 2 1/2 years. Before that she was in a group home for 4 years. All of her care since 2002 has been covered by Alberta Health and Assured Income for the Severely Handicapped. We'd be worse than broke if we had to look after the costs for her care in the U.S.
When our children were at home or in higher education we paid a minimum amount to Alberta Health Care every three months - approximately $150.00. This decreased as our children left home and payed for their own health care.
My husband and I are 70 and 69 1/3 (!). Since age 65 we have not paid anything for health care. Our medication is covered 70%, and may soon be 80%, by Alberta Health.
We are among some of the most fortunate people on this earth! We love the U.S. and are proud of it. But, we could never move back there because of the terrible health care system.
PLEASE! Democrats AND Republicans get together to help the families of your country and mine to have the health care they need. You are hypocritical to take the health care package you receive as a member of Congress and deny your fellow country-men the same resources and level of care. Do what's right for everyone else, not just yourself.
Sincerely, Betty V
